I love the story of this.

When Nicholas and Alexandra met in 1884 at the wedding of his uncle to her sister, she called him Nicky; he called her “Alix” or “Sunny.” Although Alix was only 12, she knew at that moment that Nicky was “The One.” It was on this occasion she carved their names on the window of the Peterhof Palace.
Nicky wrote in his journal, “Alix and I wrote our names on the rear window” of a nearby house. He added at the end, “We love each other.”

Every year they returned to Peterhof, the dates were transcribed on that very same window. It remains to this day.

On May 8th, the beautiful Livadia Palace, situated near Yalta in the Crimea was the setting for the White Flower Day. The tradition of this charitable sale originated in the early twentieth century by the last Empress of Russia, Alexandra Feodorona. Beginning in 1911, the whole community took part including members of the Imperial family and the nobility who were vacationing at their palaces in the region, and the local townsfolk. They flocked in numbers to contribute to the good deeds by buying bouquets of white daisies, paying what they could whether it was a few kopecks or hundreds of rubles. Each donation helped alleviate the suffering of those in need. The grand duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and their little brother Alexis eagerly assisted their mother at the open stalls.

Video footage of the Romanovs. Nicholas goofing around, looks like Queen Alexandra and Marie, and then to the far right Alexandra. She moves out of view slightly when she bends down to a little girl. You can see the love as she kisses her on her head

    Love this!

Oh my god, okay this is gonna be one of the longest comments on a post I have ever made.
The entire time I couldn’t take my eyes off Nicky (huge inappropriate older man crush).
But just sit here for a minute and think. This is, quite surprisingly clear, film footage from over 100 years ago. One hundred and fourteen years ago this was taken. Think about it.
Just how normal these people are. They act like a family. Nicky’s being the clown, Alexandra and Alix keeping the children in line and joking around, just like a regular family would today. Some things don’t change over time.
People made these people out to be evil, selfish aristocrats. But all you have to do is watch this 1 minute and 26 seconds of film and you can see how loving, how normal the most majestic Royals of their time really were.

    historyofromanovs:

The Russian Imperial Yacht, Standart, in action.

At her time (late nineteenth - early twentieth century) she was the most elegant yacht in existence and was the dream of every crowned head or millionaire. Purpose built to serve the Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family, she became the classic example how yachts at that time were to be designed.

The Imperial Yacht Standart herself was designed based on experiences gained from a long and impressive line of earlier Russian Imperial Yachts and her technology was extremely impressive even to today’s standards. Although time has almost wiped out all traces of her existence and a period of neglectance and lack of true historic interest in all matters pertaining to the lives of the last Romanovs has had a destructive effect, the Imperial Yacht Standart is not forgotten.

Once in 1907, the Russian Imperial Family was stranded aboard the ship when it ran aground on an uncharted rock off the Finnish coast. Although damaged, the ship did not sink and was repaired and soon returned to service. The Imperial Family was vacationing on the Standart during the Summer of 1914, when they received the news of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo. With the outbreak of World War I, Standart was placed in dry dock.
